In a closely fought season opening game, the visiting Arrows proved to be too strong for a spirited Surge team. Off a
platform of a strong rushing offense and solid defensive play the Arrows eventually wore out the Surge and ran out 32-14 winners.
The Arrows took the initiative early in the first quarter with 2 rushing scores from Anthony Perkins from 7yards and 5yds. The first score being set up
by Martin Hill forcing a Surge fumble and the second immediately following a 35-yard reception from Rookie Rob Mann. The Arrows defense then dug in and prevented Surge making any real comeback into the
game until late in the second quarter when the Surge pulled a score back on a 15yd touchdown pass. The Arrows were however able to restore their advantage when new Arrows QB Richard Wilde connected with
Pete Morgan for a 35 yard touchdown and make the half time score 19-6.
The second half started with the Surge putting together their best drive of the day, which culminated a QB sneak from Richard Large from 4 yards to
reduce the score to 19-12. After surviving more Surge pressure the Arrows stepped up a gear and further scores, a 35 yard rush from Anthony Perkins and a 5 yard rush from Simon Grahame put the game out
of reach and sealed the Arrows victory. The Surge did however get the consolation of a late Safety on a punt to make the final score 32-14.
This was an excellent team performance from the Arrows. On Offense the line, QB Richard Wilde and the running backs, Perkins, Mills,
Graham and Rhodes, all gave excellent performances. On Defense Richard Wilby forced and recovered 2 fumbles, Peter Reeves had two interceptions and in all the defense caused 6 turnovers which and
consistently set up the offense in excellent field position. Mention must also go to the Arrows rookies, many of whom were playing in their first game who all gave creditable performances. This was
however a victory forged by solid team play rather than on individuals efforts.
