In a tense top of the table clash the Arrows came from behind twice to snatch a late 16-14 win
against arch rivals Lancashire Wolverines. Trailing 14-8 going into the fourth quarter the Arrows put together one last drive which was finished with Bob Sumners 35yard rush to tie up
the scores. This was followed by a difficult catch from Ron Gifford in the end-zone to successfully convert the 2 point PAT attempt and seal a fine 16-14 win.
The game opened in spectacular style with the Arrows defense pinning the wolverines deep in the own half on the 2
yard line. Just as looked the Arrows would force a safety, the Wolverines came up with a 83 yard completion to immediately turn the pressure onto the Arrows defense, despite further good
defensive play, the Wolverines made the most of this advantage and soon opened the scoring to take a 6-0 lead.
The Arrows immediately responded with a 49 yard reception to Pete Morgan from arrows QB Richard Wilde to level
the scores. A successful 2point PAT from Ron Gifford then put the Arrows into the first lead of the game at 8-6. The rest of the half became a defensive struggle with both teams having
difficulty moving the ball. The Wolverines defense came up with good mid way through the quarter and forced the Arrows to concede a safety and tie up the game at 8-8.
The second half saw a similar pattern to the first, with both defenses on top. An Arrows fumble set up the
Wolverines in good field position and again they capitalised on this to take the lead for the second time 14-8 via a 25 yard TD reception.
Going into the fourth quarter the Arrows offense finally clicked into gear and two good drives saw them snatch a
late score and take the lead. Following this score the Arrows defense forced Lancashire to punt after 3 plays and good management of the time clock saw the Arrows keep possession and run out
the clock.
Defense was the star of this game with excellent performances from Alan Harris, Karl Watkins, Andy Chandler and
Jess Wyer-Roberts. On Offense credit has to be given to the Offensive Line, Bob Sumner, Dave Mills and Ron Gifford.
