In a hard fought defensive game, the Arrows finally overcame the Nighthawks and achieved a close 12-8 victory which sees them
start the season with 2 wins out of 2 games.
The first half saw both defenses well on top, with neither offence moving the ball at ease. The only real chance of the half
saw the Nighthawks stopped on 4th and 1 on the Arrows 5 yd line.
The second half however opened in explosive fashion with the Arrows fumbling a snap on a punt leaving Mersey 1st & 10 on the Arrows 20. The Nighthawks seized the opportunity and ran in the fist touchdown to give them the lead. Mersey attempted and completed a 2pt PAT to make the score 8-0. The Arrows immediately responded when Arrows QB Richard Wilde matched up with Pete Morgan for a 70yard Touchdown Pass to reduce the deficit to 2pts. The Arrows were now slowly taking control of the game, with their passing game enabling them to move the ball and their defense stopping Mersey. This was culminated in the Arrows second score this time a 5yard completion to Veteran receiver Ron Gifford to give the Arrows their fits lead of the game at 12-8.
Despite this setback Mersey came back strong and a late drive saw them go close, their attempts being foiled by an Andy Chandler interception in the
end-zone as time expired.
On offense Arrows QB Richard Wilde had an excellent game both at QB and on special teams as Kicker, and Pete Morgan made key receptions
to keep the Arrows in the game. The Arrows Offensive line also performed creditably to hold back a very aggressive Mersey defense. On Defense credit goes to Martin Hill and Karl Watkins for key
performances, however the entire defense needs to be congratulated for the second half efforts in finally turning the game the Arrows way.
