Defense turned into Offense on Sunday when the an outstanding Arrows defense gave their performance of the
season not only to shut out the visiting Mersey Nighthawks but also ran up 3 scores of their own to set up an all-time club record.
The early stages of the game were dominated by both sets of defense with the Arrows failing to make any consistent progress with the ball
mainly due to a series of silly penalties which cancelled out any gains that they were making. However following a scoreless first quarter, the Arrows defense successfully blocked a
Mersey punt and which set them up in excellent position on the Mersey 5yard line. The Offense quickly turned this to their advantage and a 3 yard pass from QB Richard Wilde to Rob Mann opened
the scoring for the home side. Almost immediately strong pressure from the Arrows defensive line saw the Arrows increase their lead via a 40 yard interception return by Arrows linebacker Mark
Pashke to increase the score to 12-0.
The second half saw the Arrows defense take an even stronger grip on the game. After pinning the Nighthawks deep in the own half and
forcing them to punt, The Arrows offense came up with a 33 yard scoring reception from Pete Morgan. This coupled with the extra point opened up the lead to 19-0.
The Arrows defense were now rampant and the fourth quarter saw Karl Watkins return an interception 20 yards for a
score and Arrows defensive tackle Trevor Ballinger strip the ball from the Mersey running back and race 25 yards into the end-zone for the not only the Arrows 5th score of the game but also his first ever for the club, and making the final score 33-0.
Apart from the three scores the Arrows defense recorded in excess of 5 sacks as well as forcing 2 fumbles and it is felt that Sunday's
performance was possibly was of the best in the club's 15 year history.
