Following a long journey north to Glasgow, the Redditch Arrows played to their champion status in crushing a
below strength Strathcylde Sheriffs with a club record 87-0 win.
The Arrows started the game in explosive fashion, scoring twice in 3 offensive plays on a 20yd run from Dave Mills and a Rob Mann 16yd TD
reception to give them an early 13-0 lead.
With the Arrows defense also dominating and forcing Strathcylde to punt on every possession, the Arrows again continued the scoring from
Simon Graham on a 15yd run following a recovered fumble, and another reception from Rob Mann from 18 yds to give the Arrows an unstoppable 27-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Arrows continued their domination in the second qtr and a 5yd Simon Graham run, a Pete Morgan 45yd Punt return, and a 11 yard Simon
Graham run saw the Arrows end up with a 53-0 half time lead.
The second half was a similar story to the first, however Strathcylde did come more into the game and had some success in stopping the
Arrows. The Arrows however continued to pile on the pressure and Dave Mills on a 6 yard rush, Brian Bennett on a 8 yd rush, Bob Sumner on a 11 yard rush and a Steve Jones 10yard interception
return completed the scoring for the Arrows. Apart form scoring 12 touchdowns , the Arrows also successfully completed 11 Field goal and Pat attempts, the field goals from 35 and 30 yards,
giving Arrows kicker Karl Watkins 15 points on the day.
Despite the scoreline appearing to be a story of offense, this was only made possible by an outstanding defensive performance which
continually forced the Sheriffs to punt and consistently gave the Arrows offense the ball deep inside their opponents half. The Arrows defense forced 5 turnovers, with interceptions from Pete
Morgan and Mark Terry, and fumble recoveries by Steve Jones, Trevor Ballinger and Richard Wilby. They also sacked the Sheriffs QB 4 time, twice by Martin Hill and once from Alan Harris
and Richard Wilby.
Despite the scoreline everyone at the Arrows has total respect with the never say die attitude and commitment showed by the
Sheriffs and which is an example of all of the good aspects of British American Football.
