The Redditch Arrows clinched the Conference Championship on Sunday by defeating local rivals Wolverhampton Vipers 35-8 and in doing so gave them a perfect 6-0 record for the season. This is the Arrows 8th championship overall and their 4th in the last 6 seasons.
The match itself was a game of 2 halves, the first saw both sides failing to move the ball with any consistency and the only scoring came on a Nigel Johnson 37 yard field goal to give the Arrows a close 3-0 lead at the half.
The second half however finally saw the Arrows offense click into gear and run in 5 touchdowns to seal the win. The scoring opened with a good Arrows drive finishing with a Ron Gifford 2yard catch from Richard Wilde to open up the lead to 10-0. Almost immediately the Arrows defense produced their play of the day with Karl Watkins intercepting the Vipers QB and return the ball down the sideline for a 25 yard interception return.
At this stage it looked as if the Arrows were being to run away with the game, however on their next possession the Arrows fumbled the ball in mid field and which was recovered by the Vipers and advanced into the Arrows end-zone for their first score. A successful 2 point conversion saw the Arrows lead cut in half to 16-8.
However from this point onwards the Arrows took control. Based on a key interceptions from Stuart Ennis, Danny Lloyd and Alton Howell and a strong rushing attack, the Arrows dominated the fourth quarter and saw them run in 3 Touchdowns to put the game out of reach from the Vipers. The first of these came on a 25 run from Bob Sumner, followed by a Simon Graham 16 yards rush and finally Dave Mills from 4 yards and which saw the Arrows run out comfortable winners.
