The Redditch Arrows amongst pulled off one of the surprises of the season when they narrowly lost 26-12 to
the number2 ranked team in the country East Kilbride Pirates last Sunday.
Going into the game as firm underdogs the Arrows shocked their visitors when on they recovered the opening kick off on the 18 yard line and
3 plays later took an unexpected lead on a Pete Morgan 4 yard touchdown reception. East Kilbride soon fought back and an 80 yard drive was finished by Steve Branscombe 4 yard reception.
The Arrows again immediately responded, a 50 yard kick off return from Anthony Perkins putting them in good field position and a drive
which was completed on veteran Ron Gifford's 11 yard reception to restore an Arrows 12-6 lead.
With both teams giving their all, the Pirates finally managed to take the lead when following Willie Brown 42 yard rush and a successful 2
point PAT a score which remained until half time.
The second half saw the Pirates gradually take control, and they consolidate their lead on a 60 yard punt return from Ian Brown to
extend the lead to 20-12.
The Arrows, however were not finished and another interception saw them with the ball on the Pirates 20 yard line. Strong defense stopped
the drive and the Pirates managed to keep take the ball and punt downfield leaving the Arrows on their own 20 yard line with 2 minutes to go.
Having to move the ball 80 yards to tie the scores, the Arrows were having to attempt big plays. Unfortunately a strong blitz from the
Pirates forced the Arrows QB to pop the ball into the air and see it drop into the arms of an Pirates defender who returned it to the Arrows 1 yard line. Gary McNey's 1 yard QB sneak
completed the scoring for the Pirates and a final 26-12 win.
Despite the result, the Arrows must take great credit for their contribution. For the majority of the game they matched the Pirates play
for play and the result was in doubt right up to the final 2 minutes. Everyone on the team played to their best and considering the quality of their opponents, (who in effect are the Scottish
national side and have several GB international and ex Scottish Claymore players in the team) can take great pride in their performance.
