The Redditch Arrows produced their best performance and the result of the season in holding Chester Romans to a 15-15 tie last Sunday. The
Arrows going into the game on the back of 4 straight defeats, including a 35-0 defeat 3 weeks earlier at Chester matched their visitors stride for stride throughout the game despite having
only 18 players available to them.
The Arrows opened the scoring early on when a fine 60 yard drive culminated in a 20yd field goal from Karl Watkins to give them a 3-0 lead.
Both teams from this point put together some good drives which were stopped by good defensive work forcing fumbles. Eventually however Chester managed to get their running game together
and a 3yard run in the second qtr saw them take a 7-3 lead. The first half ended with the Arrows twice coming close to retaking the lead on to see drives stopped inside the Romans 20.
The 3rd quarter saw the Arrows take the lead for the second time with Arrows running back Anthony Perkins breaking free for a 51yard rush and an Arrows 9-7 lead. This was increased when Arrows Linebacker Richard Wilde stripped the ball and returned it 60 yards to the Romans 1yard line. 2 plays later Perkins went in again to increase the lead to 16-7.
The Romans responded in the fourth qtr by driving the length of the field to get a 1st and goal on the Arrows n the Arrows 5yard line. Excellent defensive play forced the Romans back until they had 4th and 12 on the 12yard line. Just as it looked that the Arrows would hold, the Romans produced one of the best plays of the game with a power sweep to the right which let them back into the game at 15-13. A successful 2 point PAT tied it up at 15-15.
The final 5 minutes saw both teams go close and possession change several times. The Romans looked to have snatched the victory when they
ran into the end-zone only to see the play pulled back on a clipping penalty.
