Redditch Arrows 26  Nottingham Caesors 14

Sunday 4th April 2002

The Redditch Arrows first game of the American Football season last Sunday saw them run out comfortable 26-14 winners in a pre-season match against Nottingham Caesors.

The Arrows fielding several new faces controlled the majority of the game and put together several good drives resulting in scores. The Arrows opened the scoring in the first quarter when a Dave Mills 8 yard run gave them a 6-0 lead. This was further extended when Mills again went in on a fine 33yd rush to put the home team up 12-0. Nottingham then produced their best drive of the game resulting in a touchdown and reducing the Arrows half time lead to 12-6.

The Arrows taking possession of the ball from the kick-off drove the full length of the field to start the second half only to throw away a score when a holding penalty called back the touchdown. Despite this setback the Arrows continued to dominate and the 4th quarter saw Arrows stalwart Toby Rhodes score his first ever touchdown for the club and Steve Bell taking a 29yard touchdown pass from Arrows QB Richard Wilde , as well as completing the 2 point conversion to put the Arrows well in control at 26-6.

Nottingham however had the final say when a 7yard run and 2pt conversion saw them reduce the score to 26-14.

For both teams, this was the first action of the season and both came away with some confidence for their new campaigns this summer.

Overall the Arrows produced some nice football and showed little signs of the long close season layoff. Particularly pleasing was the performance of the Arrows newcomers, Adrian Bishop, Duncan Gray, Dean Bibb, Andy Stuteley, Brad Tipping, Richard Smith, Shawn McGloughlin and Steve Ryeland who were all having their first taste of competitive football and gained some valuable experience to add to the promise they have showed in training.
