The Redditch Arrows moved one step nearer to clinching the South West Championship with an emphatic 44-0 win over
local rivals Coventry Jaguars on Sunday. The Arrows going into the game on the back of a 6 wind and 1 Tie record were firm favourites over the winless Jaguars but with several starters
missing due to holiday commitments knew that a slip up could cost them dear in their quest for honours.
The Arrows started the game in dramatic fashion. On the first play of the game the Jaguars QB fumbled the ball which
Arrows Will Powell recovered on the Coventry 11 yard line. On their first play Arrows runningback Anthony Perkins gave Redditch the dream start by going into the end zone on 1 11 yard run for
the early 6-0 lead.
The Jaguars responded on their next possession by going to the air. This policy backfired however when on third down
Arrows Defensive Back Karl Watkins picked off the pass and returned it to the Jaguars 6 yard line. The Arrows offense made the most of this opportunity and Dave Mills, returning from injury,
went in from 6 yards to extend the lead to 12-0.
The Arrows defense was now in full flow and was forcing the Jaguars offense to go 3 and out on most of their
possessions. The Arrows offense meanwhile was hitting a purple patch , Dave Stanton hooking up with Stuart McNeil on a 30 yard reception which set up Alan Harris on a 7 yard run for a 19-0
first quarter lead.
The second quarter saw Coventry begin to make some headway with their passing game. The Arrows responded to this by
again driving up the field with Perkins going in for his second from 21 yards for a 25-0 lead. Coventry threatened towards the end of the half but the Arrows defense held firm to hold the
home team at bay.
The second half saw the Arrows rest some of their starters. New QB Alex Easby put together a good drive from the
Arrows 40 yard line which culminated in Mills 6 yard run and a 31-0 lead. On their next possession the Arrows again extended the lead when following several good runs from Martin Reed,
Alex Easby exploited a gap in the Jaguars defense on a 5 yard QB sneak for a third quarter 38-0 lead.
With the clock running down the Arrows made one final trip into the end zone when Perkins went in for
his third from 31 yards for a final 44-0 result.
