The Arrows overcome atrocious playing conditions on Sunday to post a fine 19-6 win over Nene Valley Hybrids in their
first game of the regular season.
Heavy rain and a pitch which rapidly became covered in up to 2 inches of water, as always going to be a major
factor in the game. This resulted in both teams having to rely on a rushing attack with passing almost impossible.
The early exchanges saw both teams having difficulty in keeping hold of the ball and a series of fumbles due to the
slippery conditions. The Arrows however seemed to be making the most progress and were dealing with the conditions the better. This was rewarded when they took a first quarter 7-0 lead
on yet a another fumble. The Arrows running back Dave Mills fumbled the ball only for it Arrows lineman Gary Matthews to recover the ball in the endzone for the touchdown.
The Arrows defense were now regularly forcing the Hybrids into punting the ball away. Unfortunately for the Arrows
this normally meant starting deep in their own half as the ball skidded on the surface. Despite this the Arrows put together some good drives to go into half time leading 7-0.
The second half saw the Arrows take control of the game. Anthony Perkins went in from 7 yards for a 13-0 lead and
again broke free in the fourth quarter on a sensational 56 yard run to put the game away at 19-0. The Hybrids finally got some reward for their efforts late on when a well executed shovell
pass from their QB for a 50 yard touchdown reception.
The game ended on a sour note when on of the Hybrid players was sent off for a personal foul on the last play of the
game.
