It was a tale of two halves for the Redditch Arrows on Sunday, as they overcame a sputtering first half performance
against the Chester Romans with a powerful 2nd half display, improving their record to 3-1 with a 26-0 victory.
The early game plan of testing the Romans defensive secondary yielded little result, with quarterback Richard Wilde having two of his passes
intercepted. The ever-reliable Arrows defense ensured that Chester were unable to capitalise on any opportunities they were handed however, and the first quarter ended scoreless.
In the second period, it was running back Ian Lakin who finally got the game going with a seasons best 36-yard scamper down to the Romans
3-yard line. A couple of plays later, it was Lakin again who took the ball on a sweep to the left and into the end-zone for the days first score, with kicker Jon Riddell adding the extra
point.
Following some key half-time adjustments, the Arrows came out with renewed purpose in the second half. This showed with an 8-play, 78-yard
drive that culminated with Lakin scoring his second touchdown of the day, with a 2-yard run off left tackle, and a 14-0 lead once Riddell had converted the point after. The Arrows running
game was now beginning to fire on all cylinders, with Lakin finishing the day with 100 yards on 9 carries, and Dave Mills 78 yards from 10 carries. The Chester offence on the other hand was
having no joy moving the ball, with brothers Andy (13 tackles, 0.5 sacks) and Jim Mortimer (8 tackles) tackling everything in site, and ends Adam Savage and Matt Sheldon pressuring the Romans
quarterback on every play.
In the final quarter, all-purpose player Errol Wilson got two scoring drives going: a 26-yard punt return setting up rookie Lee Lattimer's
5-yard run off right tackle for his first touchdown for the club; and an interception leading to Dave Mills blasting up the middle for the day's final score, and a 26-0 victory for Redditch.
