The Redditch Arrows were in dominant mood on Sunday as they overpowered their long standing adversaries, the Chester
Romans, by a convincing 41 points to nil. The victory sees the Arrows edge a half game ahead of the competition in Division 1 ? North of the British Senior League.
The Arrows opening drive of the game proved ominous for Chester, as running back Dave Mills ripped off 34 yards on
the first play, and capped off the drive with a 9 yard scamper off right tackle for the first six-pointer. Kicker Jon Riddell added the extra point and the tone for the rest of the day
had been set.
In the second quarter continued pressure by the Arrows on both sides of the ball began to tell, and it was not long
before running back Ian Lakin was able to follow key blocks by linemen Conor Costigan and Trevor Ballinger to blast in from 4 yards out, with Riddell adding the point after. Redditch's
following drive ended in similar fashion, this time quarterback Richard Wilde was on hand to get the touchdown from inches out, and after Riddell had converted once more, the halftime score
was 21-0 to the home side.
With Redditch receiving the second half kick-off, little time was wasted in picking up where they had left off
before the intermission. From inside the Romans? red-zone, Richard Wilde slung a short pass underneath to running back Marc Collett, who ran unopposed for a score from 8 yards
out. The day got worse for the Romans almost immediately as ball hawking cornerback Errol Wilson snatched an errant pass, and weaved 22 yards for another touchdown with kicker Jon
Riddell adding his fifth extra point of the day for a 35-0 lead.
With the Arrows defense in typically stubborn form (allowing 36 total yards during the day) the game was now
decided, so the final quarter was used to give game-time to the whole squad. Reserve quarterback Martin Huburn picked up the slack and engineered a 13-play drive that culminated in the
final score of the day, running back Marc Collett scoring his second touchdown, this time on a 10-yard run. This left the score at 41-0 to the home side, and means with four games left,
Redditch are atop their division with a 5-1 record.
