The Redditch Arrows opened up their 2007 season with an excellent 20-0 away win in Leeds against the Yorkshire Rams.
The Arrows newly promoted to the BAFL Division 1 knew that the matchup against the Rams would be a tough affair and that they would have to be on top form to come away with any kind of result.
The opening exchanges bore fruit to this with neither team making much headway and with the defensive units on top.
The Arrows finally broke the stalemate when a long Ian Lakin run was followed by a 13 yard reception by Phil Grove from Arrows QB Richard Wilde in the second quarter. The Arrows almost
increased the lead when they had the ball deep in Rams territory inside the last 2 minutes but failed to reach the endzone.
The third quarter saw the Arrows take the initiative, and a Stuart Irons interception and 41 yard return increased
the Arrows lead to 12-0. The Arrows defense was also now in full stride and preventing the Rams from many any serious offensive threat. The Arrows increased their lead when Wilde connected
with Neil Solomon from 37 yards and a 18-0 lead. A Wilde scramble on the PAT saw the Arrows close out the scoring at 20-0.
The backbone to the victory was the Arrows defense who not only forced 3 turnovers but also limited the Rams to just
2 first downs from open play. On offense the Arrows showed that they had a balanced mixture between the running game and with some genuine deep ball threats out wide.
