The Redditch Arrows opened their home programme is
disappointing style when they went down 22-12 to top of the table Dundee Hurricanes.
Both teams opened the game in less than spectacular
style both going 3 and out on their opening drives. Eventually the Hurricanes put together the first real drive of the game which resulted in a 14 yard Field Goal from
Mahamadou Niakate for a first quarter 3-0 lead.
With both teams still struggling to get any real offense
going, the Hurricanes went to the air when half way through the second quarter Fraser Thompson connected up for a 6 yard pass to extend the lead to 9-0. The Arrow pressed
hard to get back into the game but with only seconds left in the half were forced to punt leaving the ball on the Hurricanes own 5 yard line. When it looked as if the visitors
would run out the clock they completely outfoxed the Arrows defense when a long pass from the Dundee QB connected with Niakate for a sensational 85 yard touchdown pass and leave
the Scottish team with a commanding half time 16-0 lead.
At half time the Arrows regroup and looked a far more
determined group. This was rewarded when Arrows QB Richard Wilde connected up with Neil Solomon for a 15 yard completion to reduce the lead to 16-6. The Arrows hopes of
building this was short lived when another long pass to Niakate put the visitors deep in Arrows territory. Niakate then went in on a 9 yard for his third score of the game and to
extend the Hurricanes lead to 22-6.
The Arrows still has some life in them however, Wilde
connected up with Kieran McLoed on a 64 yard pass to bring the score back within 10 at 22-12 as the third quarter ended.
The Arrows had one final chance in the fourth quarter
when a Dundee fumble gave the Arrows the ball on the Hurricanes 30 yard line. They drove to the 10 yard line but on fourth and 2 came up a yard short which effectually ended any
hopes that the end of the game would be a nail biting affair.
For the Arrows Richard Wilde completed 11 of 27 for 214
yards passing and Kieron McLoed picked up 126 yards on 4 receptions. On defense Andy Mortimer recorded 9 tackles.
