The Redditch Arrows made a shocking start to the new season with a
crushing 41-6 defeat away at Oxford Saints.
Going into the game the Arrows had hoped to start the new season
with a win but were well beaten and completly outplayed by a dominant Oxford team.
The Saints opened the scored on their first possession when Chris
Taylor went on from 5 yards for an early 6-0 lead. On their first possession the Arrows the Arrows fumbled and left the ball on their 32 yard line. Oxford made the Arrows pay for this mistake
when Philip Gouldie went for a 32 yard rushing TD and a commanding 14-0 lead.
The Arrows offense were struggling to make any progress and this
coupled with the fact that most of their drives were starting deep in the own half meant that the majority of the first quarter was played almost entirely inside the Arrows 35 yard line.
The second quarter was much the same for the Arrows with
a Saints team having all of the plays. Taylor went from 4 yards out to extend the lead to 22-0 and a 1 yard run made the half time score 28-0 to the home team.
The second half saw the Arrows improve however the Saints increased
their lead to 35 points on a 9 yard pass completion .
The fourth quarter finally saw the Arrows offense making some
yardage. This was rewarded when Mike Sinyangwe went in from 17 yards to make the score 35-6. The Arrows joy was short lived however when on the ensuing kick off the Oxford returner broke free
and returned all the way to make the final score 41-6.
