1997 saw the Redditch Arrows compete in Division 1 of the B.A.F.A Senior league for the first time following the 1996
season in which the club had a perfect regular season 10-0 record. Unfortunately the jump up two divisions proved to be too difficult to handle in one go and despite many fine performances and closely
fought matches the Arrows failed to record a victory for the first time ever.
The season started for the second year running with the loss of one of the clubs most valued players, Guy Johnson. Guy who
had played for the club for over 10 years died suddenly at work and his presence and contribution was badly missed both on and off the field all year long.
The Arrows pre-season started with a challenge game against the visiting Oregon All Stars from the U.S.A. The Arrows gave a
very fine performance despite the 0-44 scoreline and it is hoped that the fixture can be played again next year. The visitors are very keen to play again and hope that in 98 to make Redditch their home
base for the duration of the tour. During the regular season the highlight was the away fixture at Sussex. The Arrows having only 20 players to Sussex's 45 led for much of the game only to go down to one
of the leagues top clubs 26-20. In fact the game was almost won on the last play when what seemed an almost certain touchdown pass was tipped away at the last moment.
